Solar Power
Going Green & Saving Money
By Brian Sawyer
Have you wanted a way to better protect our environment by going green? Have you ever opened your electric or gas bill and wondered how you could lower your payments? Have you ever wanted to go swimming in December but the pool was too cold?
Florida is known as the Sunshine State and what better way to show you're a true Floridian than by using our natural sunlight to go green with solar power. Solar power is
defined as energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy. Not only does this benefit the environment, but it can also reduce your monthly expenses.
Going Green is a major initiative across the United States. Both federal and state governments are encouraging individuals and businesses to go green. These initiatives are having a positive affect on our environment already. For example, one 5kW solar electric system on a typical 3-bedroom home will offset 82,000 lbs of carbon dioxide over 15 years, saving the equivalent of driving a car 100,000 miles, carbon dioxide absorbed by 50 trees and 30,000 gallons of water used to make electricity. There are also fossil fuels that are used to generate energy. Common fossil fuels include coal, oil and natural gas, that when used emit toxic gases that are the primary cause of pollution and global warming. Not only are these fossil fuels bad for the environment but they are also a finite resource, which will eventually diminish to the point that there will not be enough to supply our needs, or the price will be too high for everyday use.
Not only is solar power beneficial to the environment but, it can also have a positive impact on your wallet. When purchasing a solar power system you are investing into something you own, while reducing your utility cost. In addition, you can receive federal and state rebates and incentives for installing solar power. Installing solar power gives you an instant 30% federal tax credit on solar hot water systems and solar electric systems. The state of Florida also provides up to a $20,000 rebate on solar electric systems. You also receive, on average, $500 in state and utility rebates for installing solar hot water systems. While there is an initial cost to install solar power in your home, the investment will pay for itself on average in less than 5 years.
